SafeMatch® products are an easy to use, cost-effective way to accurately identify patients and staff, and ensure controlled access to the right electronic health record at every stage of treatment. Patient misidentification is a serious problem

  • Failure to correctly identify patients constitutes one of the most serious risks to patient safety and can lead to improper treatment and serious medical errors. Patient misidentification kills, and permits staggering levels of fraud, medical error and privacy violation. It is a serious problem that cuts across all sectors of healthcare practice.
  • There are approximately 200,000 deaths in the US every year due to medical errors. (IOM and JCAHO). Ten out of 17 medical error deaths are due to "wrong patient errors", or failure to correctly identify a patient according to the IOM, JCAHO, and the Association of PeriOperative Registered Nurses.
  • Death Statistics, according to the IOM (2000):

    • Motor vehicle accidents: 43,458
    • Breast cancer: 42,297
    • Homicide: 22,824
    • AIDS: 17,347
  • According to the IOM statistics above, people are:
    • 2.64 times more likely to die from a wrong patient error than a motor vehicle accident
    • 2.71 times more likely to die from a wrong patient error than breast cancer
    • 5.03 times more likely to die from a wrong patient error than homicide
    • 6.61 times more likely to die from a wrong patient error than AIDS.
  • Patients need to be correctly identified and staff needs to be authenticated and authorized routinely throughout the care process. Current methods for matching the right patient to the right chart, record, procedure, and medication throughout the care process contain significant risk for error. Iris scanning can significantly reduce these risks.
  • Traditional approaches don't identify people, they identify an item or piece of information that can be lost, stolen, copied, forged, forgotten, loaned to others, and misread.
  • The current statistical approach to matching records to patients has fundamental limitations. These limitations are causing the margin of error to increase as the process is applied to a constantly growing number of patient records.

  •  Fingerprint identification uses a contact sensor, a non-sterile pad that all persons must touch to be identified. In a clinical environment, it's likely that some users will have transmissible diseases, so non-contact technologies are a better choice.
  • Iris identification systems merely take a digital picture of the outside of your eye and do not provide any other health information. Identification is safe, sanitary, and requires no physical contact.With the power and accuracy of iris recognition, patients and staff members look into a handheld camera, and in less than two seconds, the system positively identifies the person.
  • Iris recognition technology uses a digital camera in combination with software that performs the following fnctions:
    • Acquires an image of the eye, which includes the iris
    • Defines the boundaries of the iris
    • Analyzes image data
    • Generates pattern data
    • Stores the pattern data
    • When recognition is desired, another image is taken, and pattern data from that image is matched to the stored data.

A patient or staff member that is enrolled in the SafeMatch® system merely looks into the handheld camera to be identified.
